Former Sheboygan alderman pleads not guilty to sexual assault charges

SHEBOYGAN (WITI) -- A former Sheboygan alderman will stand trial, accused of having a sexual relationship with a teenage boy.

33-year-old Kevin Matichek pleaded not guilty in court on Wednesday, February 18th to one felony count of repeated sexual assault of a child. This, after his preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors say Matichek had at least ten sexual encounters with a 15-year-old boy from June 2014 through the beginning of this month. A Sheboygan detective testified police received a tip through CrimeStoppers. The teen initially denied having a sexual relationship with Matichek.

"However, he was crying, his eyes were crying and he was trying to smile. But he was saying it was just a friendship," said Detective Tamara Remington of the Sheboygan Police Department.

Remington said the teen changed his story during a second interview.

"He got emotional again and kept repeating about the friendship but then said he needed to tell the truth," said Remington.

According to court records, Matichek told investigators the two had a deep friendship and had kissed, but nothing more. Prosecutors say the relationship was one of predator and prey.

"Well, I think he took advantage of him like anyone takes advantage of a younger person; he bought him gifts. You heard the testimony, he told him 'Don't listen to your parents; I'm your best buddy,'" said Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco.

While Matichek made his first appearance at the Sheboygan County Courthouse, the trial may not end up there. Matichek's attorney says due to all the attention the case is receiving, he is thinking about asking for a change of venue.

If convicted, Matichek faces up to 40 years in prison.

Matichek submitted a letter of resignation to the Sheboygan Common Council last Wednesday.
