Packers Mike McCarthy, Ted Thompson evaluate skill, keep the draft in mind at NFL Scouting Combine

INDIANA (WITI) -- Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have been attending the NFL Scouting Combine together for a decade. They evaluate all the players as they show their skill and take that information into the draft.

A couple of years ago at the NFL Scouting Combine, Packers running back Eddie Lacy said he could be a three down running back. He's become that in his second season for the Green Bay Packers. He started a little bit slowly statistically, but the coach says that's an anomaly.

"Yeah, I don't see Eddie as a slow starter, you know, based on some of the things that I rated, you know, the play caller just needs to give him the ball in September," McCarthy said.

The Packers generally play well when Lacy touches the ball, but they play football in the fall.

"I thought it was very important to check my cell phone before I walked in here. It's February 19th and I have no idea how many times Eddie is going to touch it in each game next year," McCarthy said.

Of course Aaron Rodgers is the key to the Packers backfield, but who backs up Rodgers? Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn are both free agents. The Packers could think about drafting a quarterback this year.

"I don't think you ever pass on a quarterback. It's the most important position in the game and if you have one, you know, at a value that you're comfortable and he's in position to pick him, I think you pick him," McCarthy said.

McCarthy made his name in the NFL as an offensive mind and is still focusing, thanks to the questions on the Packers offensive backfield at the NFL Scouting Combine.

The NFL Scouting Combine continues through February 23rd at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
