Portage County Health officials: Second suspected case of measles "unlikely" to be confirmed

PORTAGE COUNTY (WITI) -- Portage County Health and Human Services officials say after consultation with state and local health officials, it is "unlikely" the second suspected case of measles in Portage County will be confirmed as a positive case.

Health officials say this determination is based on several disease factors including lack of travel to a country or state with active measles, and signs and symptoms that do not fit the clinical definition of a measles case.

If the suspected case is determined to be measles, relevant information will be shared with local health authorities.

Local health officials remain diligent in actively monitoring the community for signs and symptoms of measles. Immunization to prevent measles remains the best defense against the disease.

There are currently no confirmed measles cases in Portage County.
