18-year-old suspect hospitalized, 21-year veteran of MPD on leave after officer-involved shooting

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- An 18-year-old Milwaukee man was taken to the hospital after a police officer-involved shooting near N. 10th St. and Concordia Ave. Saturday, February 21st.

Around 1:00 p.m., the Milwaukee Fire Department was called out to the scene for a medical emergency.

Investigators say while they were treating a patient, they realized there was an on-going violent encounter happening and they called police.

When police arrived, they say they secured the safety of others inside the home.

While searching the home for the suspect, police say the 18-year-old man pointed a long gun at an officer. That officer fired, hitting the man.

"I'm shocked, because I'm trying to wonder what happened in the house," said Ward Jackson. Jackson's relatives live at the home.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and is being treated.

No officers were hurt in this incident.

According the police, the officer involved is a  21-year veteran of the force. He has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard procedure.

Because of a new Wisconsin law regarding officer-involved deaths, the state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation, or DCI, is handling the investigation.
