Winter parking rules are over in Milwaukee, but drivers urged not to let guard down

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The snow and sloppy mess forecast for Tuesday is a reminder that winter is not over just yet. But one thing ended on Monday, March 2nd that shows it is wrapping up -- the end of winter parking regulations in Milwaukee.

Kerri Weishoff knows first hand that parking can be a pain on Milwaukee's east side. But on Monday, Weishoff was pleasantly surprised.

"I'm like, 'Oh! It's after March 1st!' And I got all excited and I realized I could park on the other side of the street -- so makes my life easier," said Weishoff.

Despite Weishoff's excitement, officials with the Milwaukee Department of Public Works warn drivers to be on the lookout for any other parking regulations that might still be in play. The city's four-inch rule might still need to be implemented -- and the DPW can declare a "snow emergency."

"The last big snow fall the beginning of February," said Richard Dollhopf, assistant manager of parking services. "We issued just under 1,000 tickets for the four-inch rule violations -- and just over 1,000 citations for cars parked illegally in the snow tow routes."

Drivers may also have another challenge to deal with now. Snow piles are making it difficult to park close to the curb. So with people parking on both sides of the street, the driving area has gotten considerably smaller.

"You have to be very cautious, you have to pay attention and it's even more challenging. And sometimes I'm not even able to park where there is parking because it's not cleaned up," said Weishoff.
