Crews respond quickly to Franklin house fire, controls blaze in less than 30 minutes

FRANKLIN (WITI) -- Franklin Fire Department responded to a house fire near the intersection of S. 122nd Street and W. Elmwood Drive around 3:44 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, March 5th.

Authorities say the fire appears to have started when a 45-year-old woman was using spray paint while working on a craft project for her daughter's birthday in the basement of her single-family home. The fumes of the spray paint hit the water heater, the paint fumes causing a flash explosion.

The mother grabbed her 5-year-old and 8-year-old daughters and got them out of the home.

The woman who was spray painting suffered very minor burns to her hands. The two young girls had their hair singed, but did not suffer any other injuries.

Another teenager who was in the  kitchen of the home at the time of the fire also got out safely.

No other injuries were reported.

According to authorities, firefighters were able to get the fire under control in less than a half-hour.

The location of the fire is a non-hydrant area of Franklin, so the fire department had to call in tanker vehicles.

An estimate on the damage is over $100,000.
