52-year-old woman in police custody, accused of slicing baby's throat with a circular saw

CHICAGO (WITI) -- A nine-month-old girl was found dead in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood Monday morning, March 9th -- her throat cut by a power saw.

Police responded to a 911 call and arrived at a home near 28th and Avers in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood, where they found the baby girl with "visible signs of trauma." The baby girl was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chicago Tribune reports police say a relative of the child -- a 52-year-old woman -- used a circular saw to cut the baby's throat -- apparently because she wouldn't stop crying. Police say the woman initially tried to shove something into the baby's mouth to get her to quiet down.

Following the alleged killing, the woman tried to kill herself. She was found by a relative and taken to the hospital, where she was in police custody.

Family members have identified the baby as "Rosie."

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services tells the Chicago Tribune it is investigating the 52-year-old woman for abuse in connection with the girl's death. That agency says it's had no prior contact with the family.
