Grounds crew removes field tarps at Miller Park: "It's time for us to get her growing again"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- It's a sure sign of spring as the tarps are carefully removed on the field at Miller Park showing off the beautiful grass it was protecting.

"Mother Nature, as you guys can see outside, the sun is shining, our wall panels are open, and it's time for us to get her growing again for the upcoming season," said Milwaukee Brewers Director of Grounds Michael Boettcher.

This is the first time the grass is exposed since November 25th when the tarp was put on to protect and maintain moisture within the roots.

Insulation boards are also placed over the clay to prevent frost from growing.

"All of the prep work that we do in the fall of the year to get the field ready because we never know what spring is going to hold. It really helps us take that uncertainty out and pretty much makes us ready on our clay surfaces for opening day," said Boettcher.

This is a much different scene then last year, as the snow and cold weather put a delay on preparing the field.

"Last year, we were still doing this right close to the season. We didn't get the roof open until a couple of days before the opener last year. So this will definitely be a nice sigh of relief," said Boettcher.

Along with removing the tarp, crews are planning to open the roof and bring out growing lights to get the grass in tip-top shape.

With Opening Day coming up on April 6th there's still plenty of work to get done, but getting this beautiful green grass exposed is definitely a good start.
