Guilty: Jury returns verdicts for two men charged in drive-by shooting that left one dead, one wounded

MILWAUKEE COUNTY (WITI) -- A jury has returned verdicts for two men charged in connection with a June 2014 drive-by shooting that left one man wounded and another dead.

34-year-old Jarmel Chisem and 37-year-old Howard Davis each faced three felony charges in the case: first degree reckless homicide, first degree recklessly endangering safety and possession of a firearm by a felon.

In court on Thursday, March 12th, a jury returned verdicts for the two -- finding them guilty of first degree reckless homicide and first degree recklessly endangering safety. The felon in possession of a firearm charges were dismissed.

Chisem and Davis will be sentenced on May 8th.

Court records show a rap song helped officials bring charges in this case.

The drive-by shooting occurred near 16th and North in Milwaukee in early June 2014.

Davis and Chisem were arrested and housed in the Milwaukee County Jail. They were held on unrelated charges -- until a break in the case.

According to documents, it was a lyrical slip-up that led to much harsher charges. Records show while in the lunchroom, another inmate heard Davis rapping about the homicide and charges being dropped. He told officers Chisem was also laughing and bragging about the incident.

With the help of a search warrant, police found a sheet of paper and handwritten lyrics referencing the homicide.
