Hearing loss doesn't stop one Milwaukee woman from opening up her own salon

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Breaking barriers and overcoming obstacles. A local woman pushes through a disability and is now a business owner.

Detail oriented Kayleigh Rucktenwald wants her new business to be impeccable.

Saturday is the grand opening of Have a Good Hair Day Salon & Spa.

"It's my dream come true," said Rucktenwald.

Starting her own business at 28 years old is an accomplishment in itself, but she's done so despite being profoundly deaf.

"I've been waiting for this for a long time. I started at the bottom working my way up," said Rucktenwald.

Signing as she speaks, Rucktenwald is talented in many ways and never let her disability defeat her.

"Growing up I always had struggles I always had to work harder to get to where I am," said Rucktenwald.

Her mother Chris Rotondi has always been her biggest supporter.

"She doesn't see her deafness as being a limitation in her life. I'm just beyond proud," said Rotondi.

Rucktenwald may be hearing impaired but the college graduate worked tirelessly to become a cosmetologist and followed her vision of opening her own business.

"Kayleigh had done a ton of research, a business plan and documents and everything," said Rotondi.

She's not only mastered her craft but also has the ability to communicate effectively.

"I have to use my eyes a lot. I have a lot of speech therapy, growing up it helped me speak," said Rucktenwald.

By overcoming challenges and growing confident in herself and her skills, Rucktenwald's talent and ambition now speak for themselves.

"She has a real creative side that's why I think she' really enjoys bridal updo's. But also detail oriented with cutting and color," said Rotondi.

Because of her creativity and perseverance, clients will leave feeling the best they can -- both on the outside and inside.

"I wanted to show people that someone with a disability can be a business owner. You can do anything you want. The worst thing you can do is not try," said Rucktenwald.

Rucktenwald wants to be an inspiration to people and also has 8 rental suites so others can own their own business as well.

The grand opening is going to be a big event. You're invited on Saturday, March 14th, for food, drinks, favors and fun from 3:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the location at 1910 North Farwell.
