Are Packers General Manager Ted Thompson and Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy anti-quarterback drafters?

GREEN BAY (WITI) -- The Green Bay Packers don't need to find a starting quarterback in this year's NFL Draft, but perhaps they will want to look for a youngster to groom behind Aaron Rodgers.

Matt Flynn was the last quarterback drafted by the Packers to actually play in the NFL. Flynn was a seventh-round selection back in 2008, seven drafts ago.

B.J. Coleman was tabbed in the seventh round in 2012, but never played in a regular-season game before being released.

Are Packers General Manager Ted Thompson and Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy anti-quarterback drafters?

"Not necessarily. And Mike does too, because Mike's a quarterback's guy. We like dabbing in the quarterback business. It just hasn't worked out that way," Thompson said.

While recent first round draft choices like Johnny Manziel and E.J. Manuel have faltered when given playing time in their rookie seasons, today's college quarterbacks are relatively well prepared for today's professional game.

"There was a time when people felt that the shotgun and all this wide open offense in college would hinder a quarterback playing in the NFL because you had to teach them to get under center. The reality of it is, pressure, third down, key situational football is the biggest challenge for a young quarterback. I think they are much better prepared today than when I first got in the league," McCarthy said.

"A lot of times, we were still in shotgun or spread, but coming under center and all the play action, things that come with going under center that we'd see at the next level is something that I've been working on a lot lately," SE Louisiana quarterback Bryan Bennett said.

NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock says of Brandon Bridge, the South Alabama quarterback, he has a ton of talent, but he has no idea what he's doing. Bridge definitely is as raw as raw gets, but he has a cannon arm.

"I take a whole lot of pride in it. It's definitely a great trait of mine, but it also can be a fault as well, because you think you can fit every ball in that window that comes and it backfires sometimes," Bridge said.

"Oh, he probably has one of the strongest arms I've done played with. He definitely has a cannon arm. I don't know if that comes from playing on a Canadian field, being so wide or whatnot, but he's a great quarterback," South Alabama TE Wesley Saxton said.

The Packers might be intrigued by a 6'4", 225-pound guy who grew up playing on Canadian fields, which are wider than U.S. fields, and in so-so weather.

"Every throw is pretty much like a far throw. If you want to throw a boundary hitch, that's pretty much like a field hitch in the NFL game, or on an NCAA field, and the weather is always windy and stuff, so you always have to throw the ball kind of hard," Bridge said.

The Packers rarely throw their darts at the quarterbacks in the draft. Perhaps that will change in 2015.
