Happy Easter? Doctors remove 3.3-inch egg-shaped mass from man's abdomen

(WITI) -- For 20 years, a man suffered from urinary frequency. The 62-year-old finally got some answers when doctors at Georgetown University Hospital found and then removed a huge, 3.3-inch mass inside his abdomen near the pelvis.

The mass looked like a giant egg and especially resembled a hard-boiled one because of its “firm and rubbery” texture. But this wasn’t an egg.

The benign fibrous mass was removed in October 2013, according to an article published Thursday, April 2nd in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The mass was identified as a peritoneal loose body, which occurs when small pieces of fat in the abdomen detach from surrounding structures and lose blood supply.

When the masses become so large, they can cause increased or decreased urinating and would need to be surgically removed. While they’re not uncommon, the masses are usually much smaller than this.

The patient’s urinary issues resolved immediately after the surgical removal of the mass, according to the journal.
