Discovery World celebrates National Robotics Week, "students are engaged in problem solving"

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Fresh, young minds with unlimited potential spent Tuesday at Discovery World sharing their passion with others.

"Science, technology, engineering, and math is something that is always going to be in very high demand in the world and something that we are always going to need, so it's very important that we always keep learning," said Rufus King High School Senior Pauline Scharping.

Kids are learning while having fun, as Discovery World celebrates National Robotics Week.

All of the presenting students ranging from elementary school to high school are members of the organization First Robotics.

"All of the students are engaged in problem solving, engaged in the engineering process to take a challenge to boil it down to what can we do, what do we need to do, and how do we approach that problem," said Discovery World Automation Educator Kevin Kolodziej.

Students in the program have six weeks to build a robot with varying capabilities.

Some are made from Lego's and others can dive underwater.

"Each level has its own challenges, and each level has its own rules, its own equipment that they use," said Kolodziej.

First Robotics Teams brought their robots to show visitors at Discovery World, with the goal of inspiring the next generation of kids to take interest in science and technology.

"Scientists and engineers are the ones that are going to change the world and invent the next product and cure cancer and send us to Mars and those are the people that we need to be celebrating," said Kolodziej.

National Robotics Week at Discovery World runs Monday through Friday from 9 am - 4pm and Saturday from 10am - 5pm.
