To stand against injustice: March, rally planned to mark one year since Dontre Hamilton shot & killed

MILWAUKEE (AP) — A march and rally will be held to mark the one-year anniversary of the killing of Dontre Hamilton by former Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher Manney in Red Arrow Park in downtown Milwaukee.

Manney shot Hamilton on April 30th, 2014 after responding to a call of a man sleeping in the park. According to Manney's account, Hamilton grabbed the officer's baton and attacked him with it, forcing him to open fire. He shot Hamilton 14 times.

Hamilton's family has said he suffered from schizophrenia but was not violent.

Organizers say there will be a march April 30th that ends with a rally at the park where Hamilton died.

They say they want to stand against injustice in their communities and hope the anniversary events will help bring awareness to the stigma around mental health and homelessness.

Manney was fired from the Milwaukee Police Department for his handling of Dontre Hamilton. The Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office declined to criminally charge Manney in this case. A Fire and Police Commission panel ruled Manney's use of force violated policy, and upheld his termination -- meaning he will never again be a Milwaukee police officer.
