(WITI) -- Many of us don’t recycle our old electronics because we don’t know how. However, it’s very important that you clean out your hard drive before you get rid of your old computer.

Best Buy offers free recycling and may even give you a gift card for your device, depending on its current value.

It’s very, VERY important that you make sure your information is wiped from the electronics when you get rid of them. I watched a video of a bunch of university students who traveled to an electronics shop somewhere in the Middle-East. The shop was stocked entirely with old electronics sent over by the U.S., and when they purchased one and checked what was left on it, they found secret government financial documents.

It is very, VERY important that you make sure your files are completely removed before disposing of your electronics. I once watched a video about a bunch of university students who traveled to an electronics shop in the Middle-East that was stocked entirely with old computers sent over from the U.S. After purchasing one and checking what the previous user had forgotten to delete, they found top secret government budget documents. Hopefully that puts things into perspective for you
