Only on FOX6: Dispute at the Bayside DPW leaves one man on crutches

BAYSIDE (WITI) -- A spring cleanup event at the Village of Bayside Public Works Department was far from usual this past Saturday, April 25th.

Surveillance video from a camera mounted outside the DPW shows Village Manager Andy Pederson in a yellow reflective vest. Pederson was behind a vehicle he says was being driven the wrong way by Marvin Sokolow. As Pederson tried to get him turned around, the car backed up -- and Pederson found himself first on the passenger side -- and then in front of the vehicle. The video then shows Pederson on the hood for a short stretch before rolling off -- and then getting out of the way as the car accelerates.

Pederson says he suffered a knee sprain and some bruising. He will be on crutches and out of work for a week.

"He did try to impede the individual from proceeding through the parking lot, for safety reasons of course," said Scott McConnell, Bayside Police Chief. "It looks like it will end up being a disorderly conduct citation, issued municipally to this individual."

While you can't see him in the video, some may recognize Sokolow from his work on the PBS program, Antiques Roadshow -- where he is listed as an appraiser.

FOX6 News tried to speak with Sokolow at his home -- but were encouraged to leave the property.

Chief McConnell had better luck.

"We'll follow up with him at a later date with it. I think tensions were a little high at the time," said McConnell.

In response to this incident, village administrators say they've already begun examining their Cleanup Day protocol to determine whether or not they need to make any changes which would prevent something like this from happening again.
