Careless use of smoking materials likely caused brush fire in Fond du Lac

FOND DU LAC (WITI) -- Careless use of smoking materials are believed to have sparked a brush fire in Fond du Lac Thursday morning, April 30th.

Just before 8 a.m. crews from Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue responded to the Supple Marsh area off Highway 45 to help Van Dyne crews battle the fire.

Officials say crews were hampered by strong winds and very dry brush.  The fire threatened to jump the highway, which would have impacted the adjacent railway.   A MABAS Box Alarm was called to bring in additional resources from many neighboring departments.

The fire was brought under control within an hour. Fire crews stayed on the scene for 90 minutes to extinguish hot spots.

Although the cause is undetermined, officials believe it was likely caused by careless use of smoking materials. There were no injuries.

The highway was closed down while fire crews were working on the scene. The Fond du Lac Police Department assisted with traffic control.
