Spot a pothole you want filled? Milwaukee asks you to 'call it in' and have it repaired

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Good news for drivers! It appears 2015 may be one of Milwaukee's better years on the pothole front.

It's a surefire sign of spring: steaming, hot asphalt being packed down by fluorescent-clad crews combating the latest crop of potholes.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett suited up and ceremoniously hit the streets with a crew early Thursday morning, May 7th.

"They put the blacktop down and then we just smash it in. It's a great, great way to get rid of your frustrations," said Mayor Barrett.

Mayor Barrett came bearing good news! There appears to be fewer potholes to repair this year.

"The reason of course, is that our winter was more mild than it has been the last two years," said Mayor Barrett.

It's meant fewer calls for pothole repair. In 2013, from January 1st to April 25th, the city got nearly 5,200 calls. Last year over the same time period, that number climbed to more than 6,100. This year, it's down to 3,300.

In the first three months of 2015, the city spent about $164,000 less on potholes than it did last year.

"The average response time is approximately three days right now," said Mayor Barrett.

But officials say they can't fill the holes they don't know about, and that's where you come in.

"When I see the car in front of me vanish, it's time to call that one in -- or actually, much before that," said District 13 Alderman, Terry Witkowski.

Aderman Terry Witkowski also says when you report them, make sure you are specific about the location.

"There might be 10 potholes in the block and the one you wanted filled doesn't get filled, so call it in by address when you come across it," said Witkowski.
