Don't expect charges soon: Milwaukee County DA's investigation into Dwyer case will take patience

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Kelly Dwyer has been missing for more than a year and half and now that her body has been found, the investigation is ramping up.

The Chief Deputy District Attorney for Milwaukee County, Kent Lovern, says a lot of work still has to be done before a charging decision will be made. The office is treating this with the highest priority moving forward.

It has been a lengthy wait and still more answers are needed.

"There is still a substantial amount of additional work that needs to be done," said Lovern.

One day after the body of Kelly Dwyer was positively identified, the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office continues to work on the more than a year and a half long case.

"What we want is the best evidence we can possibly gather here to answer the questions surrounding her death," said Lovern.

Dwyer's body was found in rural Jefferson County about 20 feet from the road in a line of trees.

Exactly how long it had been there, and an official cause of death have not been determined. The DA's office is waiting on forensic science to figure out how this case will move forward.

"We're certainly anxious to find out what other information is out there with regard to how she ended up in that location," said Lovern.

Dwyer had been missing since October of 2013. She was last seen with Kris Zocco.

Zocco is currently in prison for drug charges and possession of child pornography. He has been the only person of interest in this case, but has never been charged in connection to Dwyer's disappearance.

As this case develops, the DA's office promises to be thorough to make sure there is justice.

"Someone has lost her life here and we owe it to the family to undertake an investigation to its fullest," said Lovern.

The District Attorney's Office did meet on Friday, May 8th with the Milwaukee police homicide detective who has been working on this case.

They are also working closely with law enforcement in Jefferson County. The DA's office says this will require some patience moving forward before any charging decisions can be made.
