RIPON (AP) — ConAgra Foods says it will close one of its cookie plants in Ripon.

WLUK-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1LerJDz ) about 300 full-time employees will be laid off. WLUK reported workers were being told Monday, May 18th with layoffs starting in September and completed by December.

ConAgra said the closing covers its west plant that makes soft-bake and so-called 'enrobed' cookies. The company's east plant, which makes wafer cookies and employs about 80 people, isn't affected.

A representative from Workers United Local 91 said they are looking for ways to keep the plant open.

Management officials suggested workers apply at other jobs in the company.

"Following an extensive evaluation of our plant network, we have determined that we need to close the soft bake and enrobed cookies facility in Ripon. People can apply for other positions with ConAgra Foods if they choose," Dan Hare with ConAgra Foods said.

This is what happens when local companies sell out to large corporations like ConAgra. Not the Governor’s fault.

Apparently the old plant had so many structural problems that it couldn’t keep up with codes, and too expensive to redo a building for a shrinking business. And with people getting too fat in this country, and diabetes on the rise, it is not like a cookie business is going to grow every year. Consolidation is the only way to keep the business profitable.

ConAgra closed the Petri cookie plant in Siver Creek NY 2 years ago. Moved our machines, recipies and contracts to Ripon. Used the same excuse but our plant was in great shape and had more orders than we could keep up with working 2 shifts 10 hrs a day 6 days a week. Theu just closed 2 plants in the next town over(Dunkirk NY), guess the reasin… Should change their name to CloseAgra!!
