Southwest round trip fares dip below $100 during 72-hour sale

NEW YORK -- Southwest Airlines rolled out a 72-hour sale on Tuesday that includes some round trip fares for less than $100.

The nationwide sale includes travel between Aug. 25 and Dec. 16 with some blackout dates.

In similar sales in the past, flights that were less than 500 miles were $49 each way, 501 to 1,000 miles were $99 each way and so on. However, the current sale has a similar pricing structure without the strict ties to mileage.

Several popular routes, such as Los Angeles to San Francisco, Minneapolis to Chicago and others are showing as low as $98 for a round trip ticket.

According to USA Today, the scope of the sale appears to be limited when compared to previous promotions. Some of the airline's sub-500-mile routes are not included in the advertised $49 fares. Instead, the fares were going as low as $63 each way.

Some routes, including Chicago to Memphis and Denver to Omaha, are selling for as low as $44 each way.

The sale ends at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday.
