Students, employers who are part of MPS` "School-to-Work" program honored for their efforts

MILWAUKEE -- Officials with Milwaukee Public Schools' "School-to-Work" transition program honored over 100 students and just as many local employers on Wednesday, June 3rd.

The program readies students with special needs for the world of work.

Students receive not only employment skills, but also a wide variety of job opportunities at high-profile work sites across the city.

Work sites include Alverno College, Columbia St. Mary's Hospital and Growing Power.

"School-to-Work" officials continually assess their graduates and provide guidance for improvement.

"We can teach them so many things in the classroom, but we cannot teach them real life skills without getting them into real life opportunities and experiences and that's, perhaps, one of the biggest assets of this program," Barbara Barnes, a former "School-to-Work" program supervisor said.

"School-to-Work" staff and students have been recognized by the Council of Exceptional Children and the Wisconsin Restaurant Association.
