"Really heartbreaking:" Daycare worker, police contacted CPS about injuries to 3-year-old before she died

AUBURN, Washington -- A Washington state mother is accused of beating her three-year-old daughter to death, and documents show several people, including a daycare worker reported injuries on the child to Chlid Protective Services more than a year before she died.

Q13 FOX talked with the daycare worker who says she saw bruises on the little girl more than a year ago. She reported the case to CPS and hoped they would investigate the family.

Three-year-old Nava was never taken into custody by CPS.

According to court documents, at the time of her death, Nava had a fractured pelvis, ribs, arms and wrist -- as well as internal bleeding caused by repeated punches.

"It's really heartbreaking," the daycare worker told Q13. She didn't wish to share her identity.

The daycare worker says she believes Nava may still be alive if someone at CPS had taken her complaints and the child's injuries seriously.

"I am really upset like something can happen to a little child and somebody reports it and nobody takes any action. (The bruises) were big. They were huge," the daycare worker said.

The daycare worker told Q13 FOX she even talked with the girl's mother about her child's injuries.

"She said she was jumping on the bed. She fell and the bed was broken," the daycare worker said.

Nava's mother, Tatiana Baker and Baker's boyfriend, Demarco Jackson are accused of beating the little girl to death.

According to Q13FOX, reports confirm CPS received an abuse report a year ago -- from both the daycare worker and police.

A detective wrote: “I contacted CPS intake and was informed this incident was reported but did not meet criteria at the time of the report due to lack of detail.”

CPS officials released a written statement to Q13 FOX:

“At this point in time, the Department of Social and Health Services can say only that it has not had an open Child Protective Services case with this family.”
