"It's fun for everybody:" Sneak peek into Bronzeville Week's culture, history and entertainment

MILWAUKEE -- Culture, history, art, commerce and community are all part of a celebration next week. FOX6 News is getting a sneak peek at this year's Bronzeville Week festivities.

The rhythm of the West African drum will be heard throughout the streets of Bronzeville Week.

"It's fun for everybody, every age group," said Milwaukee Alderman Milele Coggs.

Many community leaders joined together on Thursday morning, July 30th to kick off the week long event and hosted by Alderman Milele Coggs and friends in Bronzeville.

"By energizing this neighborhood we make it a safer place to be, we've made it a more welcoming community to come to and do business," said Lashawndra Vernon, Friends of Bronzeville.

Bronzeville is primarily an African American neighborhood with rich history of culture, music and the arts.

"It is our goal and our mission to bring that back," said Vernon.

And they plan to do just that by showcasing the talent that already exists.

"Actresses and actors birth from the gutter. Entertainers of all kind from the gutter, your most compassionate teachers teach from the gutter," said Delvyn Crawford, Gutter Enterprise.

And teaching others how to find theirs.

Organizers say this festival is not exclusive to those who live in Bronzeville, they encourage everyone to come to their neighborhood and enjoy the fun,.

"If you like musical performances, we've got it all. If you like rides, if you like pancakes and poetry, you've got it right here and this is all about building community," said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.

The Bronzeville Culture and Arts Festival begins Saturday, August 1st and 10 a.m. and runs through August 8th.
