Oconto Christmas tree to be displayed at White House during 2016 holiday season

OCONTO -- It's like the Superbowl for Christmas tree growers. A tree from a northeast Wisconsin tree farm will take center stage at the White House for the 2016 holiday season!

Whispering Pines Tree Farm in Oconto has won the National Christmas Tree Association's Competition.

That means a tree from Whispering Pines will be on display in the Blue Room of the White House next year.

"Throughout time trees chance, throughout the season and that one there really blossomed and it was a good tree. I mean did you say ah ha, that's the one? Oh yeah, you always have that ah ha, when you walk by it your head turns and that's it," said Dave Vander Velden, tree farmer.

The tree farm owner says he found the winning tree just in time, right before the competition started.

The National Christmas Tree Association has presented the official White House Christmas tree since 1966.
