"This is terrible:" 12-year-old boy, woman struck by gunfire on Milwaukee's northwest side

MILWAUKEE -- Gunshots were fired at a birthday party on Milwaukee's northwest side late on Sunday, August 16th. Two people, including a 12-year-old boy, were wounded.

Balloons and streamers still decorate the area near 107th and Mill Rd. Children were gathered there Sunday evening to celebrate a grandmother's birthday. Everything changed shortly after 10:30 p.m.

"I was in bed sleeping with my children and we just heard random gunshots," said a woman who did not want to be identified.

Gunshots pierced the home where that woman and her children slept.

At the birthday party outside, there was an argument. Police say a 47-year-old woman was grazed by gunfire -- a 12-year-old boy was shot in the leg. Police say they were not the targets.

"My boyfriend ran upstairs and got my 10-year-old out of bed. Got her to the ground. Got my seven-year-old and got him to the ground. And me and my nine-month-old got to the ground as well," said a neighbor.

A bullet entered the little girl's bedroom just over her bed. Another bullet did the same through the little boy's room. In the bathroom, a bullet pierced the wall and shattered a mirror.

"I could have been doing my hair. That could have went wrong too. That would have been a head shot," said the woman.

For that woman, who wasn't even at the party, what almost happened is frightening.

"It could be like us lying in the bed. One of my kids could have been gone and this is terrible. Too much," said the woman.

There are no suspects in custody at this time.
