State elections board to consider whether lobbyists can contribute to Walker's presidential campaign

MADISON — The state elections board is expected to consider whether lobbyists can contribute to Gov. Scott Walker's presidential campaign.

The Government Accountability Board says lobbyists have been asking about whether they can contribute to Walker's campaign and, if so, when they can start.

Wisconsin law allows lobbyists to make campaign donations to congressional candidates beginning on the first day candidates can circulate nomination papers for a primary. But major party presidential candidates don't need to circulate such papers, creating confusion.

The board is expected to discuss the situation during a meeting Tuesday in Madison. GAB staffers are offering no specific recommendations but say they need a decision quickly so they can provide consistent answers to lobbyists as the 2016 campaign season progresses.
