Lunch for 200 of city's most vulnerable: Repairers of the Breach reaches out to homeless on Labor Day

MILWAUKEE -- Labor Day isn't just about grilling out and relaxing. On this Labor Day Monday, September 7th, some spent time helping Milwaukee's most vulnerable.

Milwaukee's homeless shared a meal on Labor Day at the Repairers of the Breach Labor Day Picnic.

At Repairers of the Breach, this day was about connecting people with resources in the community.

Among the chatter during the picnic, praise was given to those who have moved from homelessness to employment. Monica Walters is one of them.

"It`s great! I have a full-time job with a paycheck," Walters said.

A series of bad decisions left Walters on the street -- bouncing from shelter to shelter. She now has a place to call her own.

"Jingling my keys and going home and kicking my shoes off at the door -- it is the feeling of bliss," Walters said.

Two weeks ago, Walters started college.

Walters success story inspired others in the crowd -- like Johnny Richmond.

"It does. It inspires me to actually go ahead and talk to them -- to come on board and see what I can actually do to pitch in," Johnny Richmond said.

Repairers of the Breach officials say just one life changed is considered a success.

Repairers of the Breach is open year-round -- caring for and feeding more than 2,000 people. Currently, they are looking for cold-weather clothes, blankets and as always, non-perishable food donations.

At the picnic Monday, more than 200 people were served lunch.
