Update: Bomb Squad determines artillery shells found in home in South Milwaukee weren't live

SOUTH MILWAUKEE -- Officials in South Milwaukee say two artillery shells were found in a home near 16th and Milwaukee Avenue on Thursday evening, September 10th -- but they were NOT live.

FOX6 News spoke with a homeowner who lives near 16th and Madison. He said he and his wife moved a freezer and found the two old shells under some steps.

The man says he took them out to the alley and called police.

"We moved the freezer from the back hallway and looked underneath the steps and my wife had noticed there were two mortar shells that were underneath the steps and it looked like they were there for 30 or 40 years," Kirk Netzel said.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office's Bomb Squad was called in to assist with this investigation. The Bomb Squad determined the shells were NOT live.

There were no injuries -- and the Bomb Squad has now cleared the scene.
