"It was terrible:" Wife dead, husband hurt -- hit by car while crossing near busy intersection

MOUNT PLEASANT -- A 71-year-old woman is dead and her 74-year-old husband injured after they were hit by a vehicle while trying to cross the street in Mount Pleasant on Tuesday afternoon, September 29th.

It happened on Highway 20 at Sunnyslope Drive. It appears the man and woman were trying to get to the McDonald's restaurant across the street when they were hit.

The woman died at the scene. The man was taken to Froedtert Hospital by Flight for Life -- where he is listed in serious condition.

It appears the last people to speak with the couple were some folks at Racine Toyota -- a car dealership and service center in the area. They say had they known the man and woman were planning on crossing the busy intersection, they would have offered a shuttle -- because they say this intersection is a dangerous one.

"Everybody was really upset. It was really terrible," Linda Salinas said. "I just feel terrible for everyone."

As a result of this incident, all lanes of westbound Highway 20 were temporarily shut down at Sunnyslope Drive. This, as a jacket and some shoes laid in the street -- and a vehicle with a broken windshield sat nearby.

"It`s one of those things you just don`t expect," Salinas said.

Salinas works at Racine Toyota. She says the man and women came in to service their vehicle on Tuesday afternoon, and while waiting, it appears they decided to cross the street to visit the McDonald's restaurant.

"If we`d known they were gonna go there, we would have definitely given them a ride," Salinas said.

South Shore Battalion Chief Steve Salvo tells FOX6 News the car that hit the pedestrians stayed on the scene.

"My heart goes out to everybody that was involved, including the driver and the families and everything," Salinas said.

Crash scene in Mount Pleasant

By 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, the scene was cleared, and the striking vehicle was towed away -- but for those who spoke with the man and woman just prior to the incident, it will take time to fully recover.

"When it happens you just have to try to get through it somehow," Salinas said.

We're told the intersection near Highway 20 and Sunnyslope Drive is a dangerous one because there is no clear crosswalk and traffic speeds through quickly.

Police say the driver of the striking vehicle in this case, a 44-year-old Mount Pleasant man, had a green light at the time of the crash. We're told he is cooperating with this investigation.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash, according to investigators.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is assisting with this investigation.
