Milwaukee Art Museum set to debut $34 million renovation in November

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Art Museum is set to reopen its Collection Galleries on Tuesday, November 24th, after a massive 14-month, $34 million renovation and reinstallation of its gallery space.

The project is the first ever large-scale re-imagining of the museum's extensive collection areas, designed to create an intuitive and welcoming visitor experience, showcase its world-class collection, double the space for special exhibitions, and make crucial infrastructure repairs necessary for the museum's long-term survival.

On the museum's east side, a new entrance and cafe along the Lake Michigan waterfront connect the museum to the pedestrian lakefront path. Glass walls will offer panoramic views of both the lake and the museum's iconic Santiago Clatrava designed Quadracci Pavilion. Visitors will experience a dramatically different exhibition space with bright, flowing galleries.

Some areas, including European and American art, will double in size -- others are entirely new.

This project began essentially as an intervention, to save the collections and the buildings for future generations. But we expanded our vision to improve accessibility , rejuvenate the building and art collections. We fundamentally transformed how visitors experience the incredible works of art we hold in trust. Milwaukee and the region have embraced the museum, and we can now provide the community with a most magnificent setting to appreciate it," said Milwaukee Art Museum Director, Daniel Keegan.

The museum invites the public to celebrate the opening on Tuesday, November 24th with a full day of special events. Museum members will be able to preview galleries in advance of opening day during the Member-Only Grand Unveiling Weekend Celebration.
