"Symbol of resilience:" Milwaukee artists give new life to eye-catching mural

MILWAUKEE -- Art has always been something Reynaldo Hernandez has held dear, as he's built a career sharing his passion with the community using buildings as a blank canvas.

"Even people who drive by honk their horns and say 'good job.' They like to see positive things happening in the community," said Hernandez.

It was 1984 when Hernandez created the eye-catching mural alongside the Milwaukee Inner City Arts Council Building.

"All the different art forms that we have in our soul is on the wall -- music, dance, theater, and history," said Hernandez.

After decades of wear and tear, neighbors fought to keep the mural and bring Hernandez back to give it new life.

"To me, it's like a symbol of resilience of the community," said Hernandez.

Through the years, Hernandez has mentored many young artists including Jason Sterling or 'Jbird' as he's known in the art community.

Sterling was just 12 years old when he helped Hernandez create this incredible mural.

"It was one of those rock star moments for me as a 12-year-old. I was very enthused about art," said Sterling.

They're now reunited more than 30 years later as they continue to make an impact through art.

"I think people will enjoy it. There's a whole new generation of people to appreciate what's on here," said Sterling.

After putting in months of hard work to rehab the mural, they plan to have it done by November 30th or before the first snowfall.
