Medical Examiner: Death of 8-month-old girl who drowned in home on N. 75th ruled an accident

MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of an eight-month-old girl who drowned inside a home on N. 75th Street in Milwaukee an accident.

It happened on Tuesday afternoon, October 20th around 2:00 p.m.

The medical examiner's report indicates the infant was found floating in about five-and-a-half inches of water in the bathtub at her home.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

The report indicates the child's mother had put some food into the oven, and then went to give her two babies a bath. When the mother took another child out of the bathtub to dry him and change his diaper, the smoke detector went off in the kitchen, and the mother went to deal with that. While she was fanning the smoke, she realized she had left the other baby in the tub with the water running. When the mother re-entered the bathroom, the infant was floating on her back in the tub.

The mother then grabbed the baby, began CPR, and dialed 911.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning, October 21st.
