11-year-old boy shot after getting off bus; witness says scene was something out of the "Wild Wild West"

MILWAUKEE -- An 11-year-old boy was shot and injured on Wednesday evening, October 21st near 77th and Villard, and one neighbor describes the scene as something out of the "Wild Wild West." FOX6 News has obtained surveillance video that shows just how chaotic the scene was.

It happened around 4:45 p.m.

Witnesses say the boy and other children had just gotten off a school bus. Within seconds, the boy was struck by a bullet.

"It started with just a 'pop, pop' -- and then it was 'pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, puh, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop' -- like popcorn -- getting louder and faster and quicker and it wasn`t stopping," Chris, who didn't want to reveal her last name, told FOX6 News.

Police say two suspects were shooting at each other -- and the boy, who was not the target, was hit.

"I could see there was two vehicles speeding down and they`re shooting back and forth at one another," Greg McElwee said.

"He looked down and realized there was blood everywhere and I'm like 'let me see you' and I looked and I grabbed a towel. He got shot in his hand. That's when the shock came in and he just started crying asking for his parents as any kid would do," Charles Bishop said.

Chris says she a half-block away from the shooting scene on Wednesday evening.

"I did not want to go over there," Chris said.

A neighbor who asked that his identity be protected said he was across the street when the shooting happened.

"I saw the guys. They were out the window, leaning out the window, shooting the gun -- a guy in the front and the back," the witness said.

This witness tells FOX6 News he was frozen with fear as he watched the shooters speed away.

"That`s the last thing you`d think, you know? That a kid`s gonna get off the school bus and catch a bullet," the witness said.

At the scene, officers laid down at least 15 evidence markers where bullet casings were found -- proving to neighbors that this could have been much worse.

At last check, the boy is said to be recovering after he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police are working to identify and apprehend suspects in this case.

This was one of three shooting scenes police were called out to on Wednesday night. There were two double shootings about four hours after this incident -- one near 27th and Juneau, and another near 53rd and Nash.

These are homicide investigations -- as one person was killed in each shooting.

"Once again -- we see insane violence where people are solving their disputes using guns and (Wednesday) night we had several people killed. We had a young, 11-year-old who was caught in the crossfire and what we have is we've got people who just don't care," Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said.

We have seen a total of 123 homicides in the city of Milwaukee this year. That's compared with 86 homicides during all of 2014.
