"The window blew up in her face:" Mom says someone shot at children playing in yard in Caledonia

CALEDONIA -- A scare in Caledonia, as Halloween approaches, has a mother warning other parents. She says her daughter and her daughter's young friends were shot at with a pellet gun while playing "Ghosts in the Graveyard" this past weekend.

"I was really close to the window," Brinnley Burbey said.

"The window blew up in her face," Dawn Burbey said.

Dawn Burbey says her eight-year-old daughter Brinnley and nine other kids were playing in a yard in Caledonia on Saturday night, October 24th when someone walking by fired towards them.

"As we were looking closer, we saw the shots into the window," Dawn Burbey said.

Brinnley says she and her friends were playing "Ghosts in the Graveyard" -- a spooky hide-and-seek type game that's mixed with tag, when glass suddenly shattered.

"The officer said it was some sort of pellet gun. We don`t know if it was rubber or BB -- something with a CO2 to get through the window," Dawn Burbey said.

The children reported seeing a white male, wearing a black hat, a black hoodie and blue jeans across the street.

Burbey says police received a report of a suspicious man walking around the neighborhood earlier Saturday evening.

"Maybe he just didn`t like us," Brinnley Burbey said.

A lieutenant with the Caledonia Police Department tells FOX6 News no casings, pellets or BBs were found at the scene, and they can't rule out the possibility that the kids playing in the yard broke the window themselves.

"The holes in the window tell the story," Dawn Burbey said.

Dawn Burbey says she believes someone shot toward her daughter and other children in the dark -- and she's warning other parents.

"The kids are going to be walking around this weekend for candy. I would just watch your kids this weekend -- especially in this neck of the woods or anywhere for that matter," Dawn Burbey said.

Police say the investigation into this incident continues. They say the children, who range in age from six years old to nine years old are the only witnesses in this case.
