Wisconsin tradition: Gun deer season begins Saturday

MADISON — A Wisconsin tradition is about to begin again this weekend.

The state's nine-day gun deer season starts Saturday morning. For the first time, kill registrations will be paperless; all hunters will have to register their kills by phone or online. A number of business that have served as physical registration stations in years past will still offer phones and computers for registration. A list is available on the Department of Natural Resources' website.

Hunters also will be prohibited from killing antlerless deer in 13 counties as part of an effort to regrow the herd in those areas.

Last year almost 610,000 hunters took to the woods during the gun season, down about 4 percent from 2013. They killed 222,588 deer, down about 13 percent from the 2013 harvest.
