After hours of gunfire, the shooter is taken into custody.

"The officers were able to shout to the suspect and make communications with him. And at that point, they were able to get him to surrender," said Lieutenant Catherine Buckley, Colorado Springs Police.

Police were called to a Planned Parenthood around 11:30 a.m. Friday morning, for an active shooter situation.

"The cop was like, 'get out of here there's a shooter,' and they got their guns and kneeled down," said a witness.

It happened in a busy area of the city. And as snow fell in the bitter cold, witnesses described hearing repeated gunshots -- while family members made contact with loved ones inside.

"She couldn't say too much because she was afraid," said a man who knew someone inside Planned Parenthood.

After five hours, the suspect was arrested and police evacuated those trapped inside Planned Parenthood.

One police officer was killed in the shootout, and 11 people were injured -- including several other police officers.

"They're heroes, they're absolute heroes. The courage they displayed today saved many, many lives," said a Colorado Springs fire chief.

In Wisconsin, Planned Parenthood says the 22 health centers in the state will not change procedures or hours due to the Colorado attack -- but adds thoughts are with workers more than 1,000 miles away.

It was a terrifying incident that has a country asking when these shootings will stop.

The condition of those injured has not been released at this time.

The police officer killed in the shootout worked for the University of Colorado -- that's about ten minutes away from the Planned Parenthood clinic. Nine other people are in various hospitals, reportedly in good condition.
