"Just unbelievable:" Woman suffers life-threatening knife wounds in attempted robbery



RACINE -- Racine police say they have a person of interest in custody in connected with an attempted homicide that occurred early Friday morning, December 4th. A woman was brought to the hospital with serious stab wounds and police are now investigating the attack as part of a robbery attempt.

"Oh, my God! That's like from my neighborhood. That's scary. That's very scary," said Debra Montgomery, neighbor.

Police say it started near the intersection of Erie and High Streets in Racine.

"Wow! That's just unbelievable. Too close to home,too close to home. I have my door locked today," said Montgomery.

But before they arrive, police begin their investigation elsewhere, just before 2:00 a.m.

"Officers responded over to Saint Mary's emergency center--emergency room--reference a lady who had responded there with life-threatening knife wounds," said Lieutenant Al days, Racine Police Department.

A person who arrived with the victim tells police the unidentified 59-year-old woman suffered stab wounds during an attempted robbery inside a home.

"The young lady's injuries were so severe, we ended up calling in our major crime squad, and our evidence technicians to process the scene," said Days.

By early Friday afternoon, Days says detectives have gained some ground.

"It sounds like with the most recent text I received with you about three minutes ago, that we might have someone in custody of interest," said Days.

Lieutenant Days says investigators continue trying to amass information pertaining to this case.
