"She will not be deleted:" New Wisconsin license plate could help in the fight against cancer

MILWAUKEE -- You could soon help cure childhood cancer by stopping at your local DMV. New legislation in the works is calling for a special license plate in Wisconsin.

"She was a girl of such complete strength, bravery and courage," said Tricia Verhaalen, Alison's mom.

The Verhaalen family was back inside Children's Hospital of Wisconsin for the first time since an inoperable brain tumor claimed the life of their 10-year-old daughter, Alison.

"She will not be deleted from our thoughts or conversations," said Matthew Verhaalen, Alison's dad.

They came up with the idea for a new license plate -- a gold ribbon with a hand-print inside a heart.

"They selfishly took on the task of helping others by raising awareness," said Representative Janel Brandtjen (R - Menomonee Falls).

Proceeds from the sales of the specialty plate would benefit the Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer -- or the MACC Fund.

The MACC Fund helps support research that has saved countless lives.

"From 20% survival rates to over 80%," said MACC Fund President & Co-Founder Jon McGlocklin.

The hope is to make even bigger strides in the fight against childhood cancer.

"Every day, thousands of people are going to see this license plate on the road driving around, and every time it will come into their mind about the MACC Fund," said Senator Duey Stroebel (R-Saukvile).

"She just showed us what it means to live every single day," said Tricia Verhaalen.

There still needs to be a public hearing for the bill. Lawmakers hope to vote on it in February of 2016, and have the specialty plates in circulation shortly after that.
