Sheriff's Office: One person in custody after pursuit on city's south side

MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee County Sheriff's officials say a suspect was taken into custody following a short pursuit that took place on Milwaukee's south side on Monday afternoon, December 7th.

The pursuit began around 4:15 p.m., when a deputy on patrol came up behind a vehicle near S. 6th Street and Mitchell Street in Milwaukee.

The deputy ran the vehicle’s plates, and found out the vehicle was listed as stolen and wanted in reference to an armed robbery in the city of Milwaukee.

While waiting for backup from deputies or MPD, the suspect vehicle took off, ran a red light, and then crashed into a light pole near S. 2nd Street and Orchard Street.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle got out and fled on foot, and that suspect was pursued by the deputy on foot.

That deputy lost sight of the suspect, but MPD officers and sheriff’s deputies flooded the area and found the suspect lying down and hiding in a backyard near S. 3rd Street, about a block away from the crash.

The suspect was arrested by MPD, and they also took custody of the vehicle to process it for evidence.

No injuries were reported.

The pursuit of the vehicle lasted about five to seven blocks.

Once Milwaukee police are through with their portion of the investigation, the Sheriff’s Office will pursue charges of fleeing an officer.
