Students at for-profit schools will see loans forgiven

MADISON — The state board that oversees for-profit colleges says hundreds of students who enrolled at four Wisconsin schools can get some of their loans forgiven.

The U.S. Justice Department in November reached a $95.5 million settlement with Education Management Corporation, a Pittsburgh firm that runs for-profit schools, to resolve allegations of deceptive recruiting.

The Wisconsin Education Approval Board announced Monday that 933 adult students who enrolled at four EDMC institutions — the Art Institute of Wisconsin and online programs through Argosy University, South University and the Art Institute of Pittsburgh — will have more than $916,500 in loans from the institutions forgiven under the settlement.

The students had to have dropped out within 45 days of beginning their first term between 2006 and 2014. The board asks students to call 855-725-4301.
