"Simply hang up:" Sheboygan police receive multiple complaints about IRS phone scam

SHEBOYGAN -- The Sheboygan Police Department says they have received numerous phone calls regarding a telephone scam.

According to police, the subjects call posing as the IRS, demanding that the victim pay a bogus tax bill. They may ask the victim to send money via a prepaid debit card or wire transfer. They may also leave “urgent” call back requests on the phone.

The IRS will not call you to demand immediate payment, require that you pay your taxes a certain way, or ask for any credit/debit card numbers over the phone.

Police say these scammers may even threaten to bring in police or other agencies to arrest you for not paying.

Police say if you receive such a call, do not give them any information and simply hang up.

If you know or think you owe money to the IRS, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
