"Wonderful thing:" City of Milwaukee, Milwaukee County employees give back to vets

MILWAUKEE -- City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County employees got into the holiday spirit on Monday, December 21st to benefit veterans.

It was all part of the 9th Annual Holiday Drive, which took place from November 23rd through December 18th.

This year's drive was to collect basic household items that will support veterans. This year’s drive expanded to support both the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative (MHVI) and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center.

Donation bins were set up inside City Hall, the Courthouse and other facilities across Milwaukee County.

The veterans who benefited say it's much appreciated.

"At least they're thinking about us, and that's a wonderful thing that they did. All the people that donated -- I'm happy and I think most of the veterans in here are happy," James McKey, WWII veteran said.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett and Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele met with veterans and delivered items at the VA Medical Center on Monday morning, December 21st.

Donors for the 9th Annual Holiday Drive include the Brewers Community Foundation, Inc., Lamar Advertising, Meijer, Jewish Community Center, Marcus Corporation, Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee Public Museum, Urban Ecology Center, Friday’s Front Row and Jimmy John’s Subs.
