22-year-old inmate at Racine County Jail charged, accused of attacking corrections officer

RACINE COUNTY -- An inmate at the Racine County Jail has been charged, accused of attacking a corrections officer on Friday, January 1st.

It happened shortly after 6:30 p.m.

The corrections officer was taken to Wheaton Franciscan - All Saints Hospital.  He suffered significant injuries to his shoulder and arm and abrasions to his face.

The accused is 22-year-old Isaha Walker of Racine. He is facing four charges in this case: battery, causing great bodily harm, battery by prisoners, resisting an officer and disorderly conduct.

According to the complaint, on the evening of January 1st, a corrections officer was supervising the removal of cleaning supplies from a dayroom at the jail. This corrections officer said he saw an inmate "square up" to another inmate (noted as an inmate worker in the criminal complaint), giving that inmate a "thousand yard stare." The corrections officer said he felt a fight was imminent.

The corrections officer ordered the inmate worker to come to the corrections officer position near the officer pod area, and he ordered the dayroom door closed.

The corrections officer said he observed Walker standing just outside the door to the dayroom, in a position that prevented the door from closing. The corrections officer ordered Walker to return to the dayroom and close the door.

According to the complaint, the corrections officer held the door with one hand, while gesturing for Walker to enter the dayroom with the other hand.

The complaint says Walker made a comment about the corrections officer's taser -- reaching out with his hand, and making contact with that taser.

The corrections officer then attempted to create distance between himself and Walker -- delivering "a single, open-handed strike using both hands while stepping backwards" in an effort to force Walker into the dayroom and shut the door.

This failed, and as Walker regained his balance, he "charged" at the corrections officer, according to the complaint. Walker is accused of shoving the corrections officer with both hands, and then swinging both of his hands, which were closed into fists in an attempt to strike the corrections officer.

The complaint says Walker's push forced the corrections officer backwards, and he stepped on a styrofoam container laying on the ground, losing his footing.

The corrections officer fell to the floor, and Walker fell on top of him.

As the corrections officer fell, he reported he heard a "pop" and felt extreme pain. He was unable to move his left arm. He also became temporarily disoriented due to the force at which he hit the floor.

The complaint says after the officer fell, Walker began striking him with closed fists multiple times.

The corrections officer was eventually able to unholster his taser and deploy it towards Walker. Another corrections officer also deployed a taser.

Walker fell to the floor and he was placed into handcuffs and secured.

The corrections officer who was hurt was taken to the hospital.

At the time this incident occurred, Walker was being held in jail in connection with a case charging him with one count of burglary, a separate case charging him with disorderly conduct, and a separate case charging him with five counts of burglary, one count of theft, six counts of felony bail jumping and six counts of misdemeanor bail jumping.

Walker has a total of five open criminal cases out of Racine County.
