No one yet arrested after one-year-old girl dies of apparent heroin overdose in Utah

PROVO, Utah -- Police in Utah are investigating the apparent heroin overdose death of a one-year-old girl.

On December 2nd, paramedics were called out to a home in Provo, Utah. One-year-old Penny Cormani was found with purple or blue lips. She was unresponsive.

Cormani's mother, Cassandra Leydsman Richards indicated she fed the child, and said she was doing laundry as her daughter played in the front room, according to court documents.

Cormani's mom put her down for a nap around 11:00 a.m., with a bottle of milk.

When she went to check on the child at noon, her lips were blue or purple, and she was not responding.

The mother attempted CPR and dialed 911.

Penny Cormani was pronounced dead at the hospital.

During an autopsy, a medical examiner determined Cormani had a lethal amount of heroin in her system, and codeine was also present.

Court documents show on the day before the baby girl's death, David and Sina Belgard allowed Cormani's mother and father, Casey Cormani to stay at their home in Provo.

After the baby's death, the couple consented to a search of their home, and numerous items of drug paraphernalia, including burnt foil with residue and straws with burnt ends and residue were located in the room that Richards and Cormani had stayed in, and among Richards' personal belongings.

Burnt straws were also found in the living area downstairs on the carpet and on the coffee table.

David Belgard told authorities he had seen Richards and Cormani using the straws to inhale their prescriptions, according to the documents.

The documents indicate Richards and Cormani have denied any illicit drug use -- saying they consume their medications orally as prescribed.

According to the documents, Richards and Cormani told authorities the drug paraphernalia belonged to the Belgards.

A criminal history check shows David Belgard has been arrested and/or convicted on charges including driving under the influence, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of heroin, amphetamine and marijuana, false information to police and resisting arrest.

No one has been arrested in connection with Penny Comani's death at this time.
