FOND DU LAC —  A fire destroyed a popular spot for a fish fry in Fond du Lac.

Officials say the Wayside Tavern on West Division Street is a total loss after a blaze broke out early Wednesday, February 24th. An apartment above the tavern was vacant.

Responding firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the windows of the second story of the structure.

Crews were deployed to all sides of the structure with a defensive fire attack.

A “MABAS Box Alarm” was called to bring off-duty firefighters and additional departments to the scene.

Authorities closed several side streets as smoke and fire poured from the tavern.

There were no reports of injuries.

Fond du Lac firefighters were expected to be on scene all day to monitor hot spots.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
