Woman dies from injuries after being pinned under car in grocery store parking lot



GREENFIELD -- A woman struck in a Greenfield grocery store parking lot has died from her injuries. The victim is identified by police as Vanessa Rodgers. She was in the ICU for more than a week before she died.

28-year-old Rodgers, an employee of the Pick 'n Save store near 76th and Cold Spring, was pinned under a vehicle after she was struck in the parking lot on Friday, February 26th as she was headed into work. The driver of the car was an 80-year-old Milwaukee woman.

Police have said speed and impairment were not factor in this incident. Police said the 80-year-old woman was traveling at a low speed, and was making a turn towards an exit at the time of the incident. She remained on the scene, was cooperative and was not cited.

Surveillance video shows the moments before the crash, and 911 calls reveal the urgency at the scene.

911 Caller: “A lady ran over a lady. She’s trapped under her car.”

Dispatcher: “OK, this is at Pick 'n Save?”

911 Caller: “Yes, 76th and Cold Spring."

911 Caller: "Oh my God, she's trapped under the car."

Dispatcher: "Is she underneath the vehicle?"

911 Caller: "Yes, she`s completely...her entire body is." 

Dispatcher: "Her entire body is underneath the vehicle?"

911 Caller: "Her entire body is under the car."

911 Caller: “Somebody is getting a jack. Make sure you put the jack under the frame. Make sure the jack goes under the frame.”

911 Caller: “The whole car is on top of her. She’s completely underneath it.”

Dispatcher: “Our fire department should be coming up on scene. We have them out there, OK?”

911 Caller: “OK, we’re trying to jack up the car ourselves.”

Dispatcher: “OK, make sure you don’t pull on her. Make sure she stays there.”

Rodgers was rushed to Froedtert Hospital and received treatment in the ICU.

On Tuesday, March 8th, she succumbed to her injuries.

Roundy's released the following statement in the wake of Rodgers' death.

This case was reviewed on March 3rd by the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for potential charges against the striking driver.

Officials aren't filing charges at this point -- awaiting the driver's blood test results from the Wisconsin Crime Lab.

Meanwhile, nearly $7,000 has been raised for Rodgers' family through the GoFundMe.com account.
