On Thursday, April 7th, some Fond du Lac first responders were honored for their work on that day.

"It`s been a difficult time. Everybody has their good days and bad days," Sgt. Andrew Hyer with the Wisconsin State Patrol said.

Five Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue members were honored by City of Fond du Lac and Wisconsin State Patrol officials for attempting to save Casper's life.

21-year-old Casper was killed on March 24th, 2015 during a shootout with a bank robbery suspect. It was his first solo day on the job as a trooper, and he is the youngest law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty.

Casper's final action was shooting and killing 38-year-old Steven Timothy Snyder, a bank robbery suspect who was heavily armed, and had already killed earlier that day.

Not long after the 911 call came in for the bank robbery in Wausaukee, it was reported Thomas Christ was found shot to death.

Evidence later showed Snyder was responsible for both the Wausaukee bank robbery, and the shooting death of Christ.

"There`s no doubt in my mind he saved other lives and we all appreciate what he did that day," Phillip Seibel said.

Seibel was part of the paramedic unit called out to the scene of the shootout.

"They had little information about what they were actually getting involved in, and soon found out they'd be treating an injured trooper. Med 43 along with the assistance of Engine 473 attended to Trooper Trevor Casper and provided critical life support measures," Assistant Fire Chief Steve Beer said.

Seibel was with Trooper Casper during his final moments. He was later named Fond du Lac's Paramedic of the Year.

"It`s a very humbling experience. I don`t expect any awards for the job I do," Seibel said.

Seibel though, was quick to point out Casper's courage.

"It`s hard because he was a guy my age, just trying to do his job and help the community and he had to give his life that day," Seibel said.

Trooper Casper's peers handed out the awards.

"I understand a lot of the emotions. I`ve gone through them as well," Hyer said.

Trooper Casper will be honored in May, when his name will be etched into the state and national law enforcement memorials in both Madison and Washington, D.C.
