An effort to end multiple sclerosis: Thousands raised during Walk MS: Milwaukee 2016 event

MILWAUKEE -- The Summerfest grounds was the site of the annual Walk MS: Milwaukee 2016 on Sunday, May 1st -- hosted by the Wisconsin chapter of the National MS Society.

The event, which began at 10:00 a.m., was an opportunity for folks to team up with friends, loved ones and co-workers to raise awareness and money to fight multiple sclerosis.

According to the Walk MS: Milwaukee 2016 website, the event raises more than $1.4 million each year in the fight against MS.

The fundraising supports research, programs and services that help those affected by MS to live their best lives, according to Walk MS officials.

According to the National MS Society, the cause of MS is still unknown. Scientists believe the disease is triggered by as-yet-unidentified environmental factors in a person who is genetically predisposed to respond.

The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease, National MS Society officials say.

The goal for the Walk MS: Milwaukee 2016 event was $330,000 raised.

FOX6's Julie Collins was out at the Summerfest grounds on Sunday, May 1st during FOX6 WakeUp News -- previewing the event.
