MILWAUKEE -- Kids and concussions -- it's important for parents, coaches and athletes to know the symptoms. Jessica Geisler,  a certified athletic trainer with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, joins FOX6 WakeUp to tell us about the warning signs.

What are the signs and symptoms of a concussion?

There are many signs or symptoms associated with a concussion or traumatic brain injury (TBI). Some may appear immediately while others may emerge over time. Additionally, how long a symptom lasts depends largely on the individual.

Concussion Signs & Symptoms

-Headache or pressure in head
-Dizziness
-Fatigue or drowsiness
-Nausea or Vomiting
-Confusion or Memory loss
-Difficulty concentrating
-Light and noise sensitivity
-Vision or Balance problems
-Behavior or personality changes
-Temporary loss of consciousness

Why is it important to consult with a concussion care expert and how can you set up a treatment plan?

Wheaton concussion specialists recommend that all athletes above age 10, participating in contact sports complete baseline testing. By completing baseline and post-concussion testing, the severity of a concussion can be determined and a treatment plan can be developed for return to learn and play.

Baseline Testing

-Attention span
-Working memory
-Sustained and selective attention time
-Reaction time
-Response variability
-Non-verbal problem solving
